im having a hard time shifting into 1st and 3rd... 2nd and 4th seem fine... is there a way to check the fluid in a standard? if so what does it take for fluid... or should i start googling muncie 4 speeds
There is a 1/4 inch hole at the bottom of the Hurst mechanism that runs through all three levers. This is called the neutral alignment hole. To ensure proper adjustment, run the shifter from first into second and then back to neutral. Insert the neutral alignment pin (or a 1/4 inch drill bit) into the neutral alignment hole. If the 1-2 lever interferes with the smooth insertion of the alignment pin, remove the 1-2 linkage rod from the shifter and thread the adjuster button either in or out to eliminate the interference. Repeat this procedure with the 3-4 lever and reverse.
To adjust the stop bolts, back the bolts out of the shifter frame until only a few threads remain. Push the stick firmly into third gear and hold. Screw in the stop bolt until contact is made. Release the stick and back the stop bolt out one turn and tighten the jamnut. Push the stick into fourth gear and repeat the procedure.

ok i have checked the fluid and it seems ok.... if i put it in to 3rd gear and push it too far.. the gears grind... even once its in 3rd and im driving if i push on the shifter it will grind.... uhhg
From your profile it appears you have a 77. I'm not familiar with the later C3's, but you should be able to remove the console shifter plate and the boot to get to the shifter and the stops.

arrgh... i cant get at it from the console area...... somethings messed up though... its very hard to put into 1st gear... goes in very tight..... can i disconnect to other end of the rod? just to see if the shifter is messed up or the tranny?
i was able to jack the car and get at it from under the car.... the 1/4" bit fit right in no problem just like it says.... uhhg... im guessing time to bring it in to the shop and hear the news on a rebuilt tranny...
yes. the stop on the back side of the shifter was letting the shifter be pushed forward too much...im guessing thats why it would grind if i pushed it to hard... but the issue is actually getting it into 1st or 3rd.... its very dry.. its like forcing it in to those two gears.... 2nd and 4th are smooth....
Pushing too hard on the shifter once the transmission's in gear won't make it grind. The only way to get grinding is if the internal gears are still turning while you're trying to shift. I.E. like when the clutch isn't pushed in all the way and you're trying to put it in gear.
Are you trying to shift into 1st and 3rd while the engine is running and you're pushing in the clutch? If so, turn the car off and push in the clutch. Now try going into 1st and 3rd. Does it go in now? If so, you're stops are okay, but it may be a clutch issue.
If not, then you still have a stop bolt problem. I recommend you unscrew the jam nut and then loosen the rear (1st and 3rd) stop bolt 3 or 4 turns then try it. If it now goes in with the engine off and the clutch pushed in, that's your problem. If it still won't go in, then yes, you may have a transmission problem.
is doesnt matter if the clutch it pushed in or not or if the car is running or not... i have to force it in to 1st or 3rd..... when the car is in 3rd.. and just driving , clutch not pushed in, if i push on the shifter it will grind.....
