i have a 73 L-48. i was told that it has 190HP, but HP was rated differently back then (so im told). so how much HP do i have compared to newer cars??

From what I have heard, and I am no authority, the 190 hp is with all the accessories on (alt, water pump) were as previous to that, they were measured without all of that stuff. I could be wrong, but the 190 hp is the same way that they do it these days.

Starting -72 SAE NET horsepower rating has been used, so your 190 hp should be comparable to new cars. Before that SAE gross figures were used which were measured without any power robbing accessories like alternator, PS pump, air filter housing, exhaust pipes and mufflers etc. The old SAE numbers were nice but had little to do with the power one would see when the motor was installed in a car...
