Default 700r4, missing some gears question

Hi,
For the first time in 5 years (resto) I've put my transmission in gear. This is suposed to be a bowtie Overdrives unit ordered by the speedshop here in Belgium but for all I know they sold me one from a wreck on their lot...

It seems the car moves in D, but not with the shifter in R,3,2 and 1?!, in park it does lock. I couldn't drive it as my brakes still haven't been sorted
I checked the fluid level and it didn't reach full cold with the engine running for about 1 minute. So I guess 5 qts is not enough.
I thought low level would make the tranny slip or not hold OD, can it also cause the sympthoms I decribed, or should I start feeling being ripped off?
Need some peace of mind (hopefully) as I can't work on the car for the next couple of weeks
Thanks
Nick

It's normal if an auto. is too low on fluid, it won't go. If it's a little low, it might warm up & then go.
You need more fluid.

i would call BTO and see if they sold and shipped a 700r4 to belgium around the time you bought yours and see if they tell you a way to identify one of their transmissions. it's better to know for sure if you got screwed or the real deal.

Most automatics take closer to 10 quarts. That torque converter alone can hold almost a gallon. You need more fluid.

Dembo,

Does your speed shop seem to do a decent amount of business? Reputations are hard to come by, and even easier to lose. If they're still there after 5 years I might think they were doing legitimate business.

However for peace of mind, I would do the due diligence suggested by GS977.

Thanks guys,
They work with a agent in the states who does their buying and shipping and ofcourse they try everything to keep his name a 'secret' out of fear people would start doing business directly so there's almost no way of knowing who supposedly ordered the part at BowtieO. good reputation, no, alot of business yes as it's the only one... They come from France to order parts from them. They swapped out my differential for a revised one. First of there was no oil in it, the yokes moved in and out for more then half an inch and all gears where rusted, I could make a picture how it looks if you're interested. So that's why I'm starting to think they sold me a tranny laying around for the price of a BTO revised one.
I'll add fluid but it sure looks like its fubar reading 'no reverse' articles on the net...
Just when I thought the car was ready...

Default a good news update

THanks guys,
Finally had the time to work on the car. Let it come to temperature and added oil untill it came in between full cold / hot and I've got all gears . Still can't drive it due to no brakes but nevertheless it's already something
