Default Interior Screws

How do you all deal with stripped interior screws (like around the dash and on the door panels, etc). Seems I have more of them stripped than not. Causes everything to droop, squeak and rattle. I would fill with a weld and drill if I had a welder, but there must be a simpler way.

I keep sheets of aluminum on hand. Lowes has them. You can cut a small strip of 0.125" wide by 0.5" or so. Put it in the hole as you start. A pair of hemostats works well. The screw will bite it and the existing metal and will be plenty strong.

This scenario is much simpler than pulling out the welder to fill in a stripped sun visor hole and maybe hurting the new carpet/seats/console etc.

Drywall anchors secured with a dab of epoxy.

A short piece of a paper clip placed in the hole. Sometimes I'll bend it in a U shaped which holds it in place while I start the screw.

Fill hole with cold weld, install screw(no load on screw) before weld sets. Let weld set remove screw install part tighten screw.Works for me

For us, when installing a door panel with stripped holes we hit it with the mig welder... just a tap on the trigger will fill the hole, we re-drill and are ready to go. Wall anchors work great and are a quick and cheap solution that will hold for a very long time...

But.. as a commercial store I never want to be asked the question from a customer as to why we used them. Overkill on our part but we have to do it that way... you don't.

For us when we are working on a dash center bezel, we use plastic fusion. Anytime we are dealing with a stripped hole in plastic we go to ole faithful Plastic Fusion and fill the hole. We re-drill and then it is like new.

Plastic fusion can be purchased under several names one would be plastic weld. It is a two part epoxy that loves plastic... it is your friend....

Great discussion with instructive solutions for a challenge many of us confront who elect to find the joy of working on these cars ourselves.

Hi,
Often the interior trim panels had j-nuts ad u-nuts for the screws to tighten in but they've fallen off or just not put back on in the car's previous life.
This is another reason to have the AIM open to the right, (or close to right), page so you can see what probably should be there.
I think the interior door pulls (no u or j nut) are the worse because the mounting screws were just begging to be pulled back through the hole each time the door was closed.
Good Suggestions!
Regards,
Alan
