I recently took my vented 69 gas cap apart, because almost every 40 year old part is shot, by bending the crimped tabs you can dissassemble clean and inspect the vent/1 way valve which is just a spring loaded flapper valve, it had a ton of crap in it and probalbe was not working like it should. you can clean and rebuid the complete assemble.

Hey guys, gasoline expands when it is heated. The vented caps are only suppose to let air in to replace the lost fuel. What happens when you open a gas can in summer? Wooosh right? I was a fuel handler in the army for 3 years.
