10-11 city and 15 highway. This was running on 7 1/2 cylinders as my cam was slowly grinding its way into oblivion. Still not too bad for a 454, IMO. EPA rating for mine was 8 city, 11 highway.
Lessee, it's not good, but that isn't way I got it. ;) I drove 200 miles on a cruise last summer ranging from 60 mph freeway speeds to 30 mph cruising. I figure 10 average and much less at anything with the expression...'YES'... in it. :D
I went from Orlando to Sarasota for the St. Armand circle show. 134 miles. .....11 gallons of AMOCO 93 so that's ... A...er..A . er.... you do the math :cry It's fun though...
Overall, I think that I won't improve much without compromising the power. Maybe some headers and mufflers would help make it more efficient. All my mods are in the way of power first and economy after. These cars where made to be driven. So step on it. :D
I consistently get just under 15MPG with my 350/TH400 3.08 rear. That is mostly highway diving, 75MPH and 60MPH in the speed zones. I am considering changing to a 700R4, which I read adds about 2MPG. When I first got the car, I drove about 70 on the highway, and got 15MPG even. Joe
I think, for normal driving styles, your mileage is right on target.
But it's like Taijutsu said--driver habit is everything. I've seen 24 with my 77 L-48, 3.08 gears, TH-350. But I've also seen lows of 17. I rarely beat on the car. I have a very light throttle foot, look far ahead and coast to lights..basically, I drive like old people screw. And that's why my mileage is so good.
What my mileage will be with the new engine? Who knows. Probably the same, maybe better, as I expect it to be more efficient.
("34 degrees mecanical at 2500 RPM and 55 degrees total at the same RPM")
What are you talking abought 55 degrees total and this thing runs, That seems impossible so you are saying that the plug fires at 55 degrees before TDC Your pistons and valves must be fried by now.
The mecanical advance work with the engine RPM and the vacuum advance work with engine load.
If you floor it, lots of air/gas in the combustion chamber so it burn quickly and the vacuum advance don't give you any as the vacuum is down so you have only the mecanical advance.
When coasting, little air/gas in the combustion chamber so it take more time to burn completly. The additional retard that give the vacuum advance as the vacuum is up help to burn all the mixture.
The WeasleVette gets around 10 to the gallon. Maybe 12 on the highway if I'm lucky. But instead of miles per gallon...FUN per gallon should be the question.
In that case...the WeasleVette gets aroound 100 FPG!! :yesnod:
Weasle
I think I got 12mpg last weekend going to the car show, I think a big thanks goes out to Lars for that one since I never got that before he rebuilt my quad, not bad for a 454 with 3.36's.
I get 10 gallons per month!! That is how much gas I used in a month just starting and running the car in the garage every few days while I am restoring it!!
Im like Burners only 350 turbo instead of 4 speed. My car loves the higher rpm range. My odometer dont work so I have not checked mileage but I went this weekend from Dorr to Lansing drove around Lansing and drove back to Grand Rapids on 1 tank of gas. Thats not too bad at 80 - 85 with 3:73's
estimate about 220 mi total. I dont know you do the math. Im not sure how big of a tank it is 20 gal? about 11 mi to the gal if thats the case but at 4000 rpm I still dont think thats bad.
Today, I decide to pop the top of the Quadrajet to try some primary jet and rod. It was the first time so I checked everything. Fuel bowl height was set too low and to my suprise, the power piston lower stop was set too high. Well about 1/2" too high. So when cruising, the primary rods weren't closing the hole on the jets causing a rich condition for sure. I've set it as per Lars technique and well see how much improvement that'll do.
Now, the engine run even smoother than before and seem to like the richer jets rods that I put on it; 73,44 in replacement of the 71,43.
