Default RE: Getting Parts Chromed.

Don't know if anybody's noticed lately, but the cost of 'Chroming' has 'Sky-Rocketed', recently.

Removed all of the trim from the body where the t-tops mount.

The pieces are of different alloys. The center t piece is stainless & I learned that some of them were 'flashed chromed'. the 2 windshield pieces at either end of the top of the windshield are aluminum [ones with the holes in them]. The longer thin pieces on the rear are 'pot metal' & the little mounted triangle stricker plates are steel. AND, the other little mounting pieces are steel too.

Went out to a few Chrome Shops & almost 'blew a Gasket' when prices were Quoted.

The T Piece, which can be polished out too look real nice, but chrome would be better, was qouted for chroming @ $400.00

The 2 little pieces for the ends @ the top of the windshield, quoted @ $150.00 each !

The 2 longer thin pieces for the rear t-top area, quoted @ $125.00 Each.

The 2 little triangle pieces. $85.00 each.

And all of the other smaller pieces combined: another $200.00

Add it all up & it's a 'Whopping' $1320 bills for those pieces.

AND ..... they're not even 'tripple chrome plated' Like they use to do in the past.

Thanks to the EPA & 'Speculaters in the Market', copper is un-real priced.

These are prices in my local area of Detroit. BUT, I'm sure it's like that everywhere. Even if I find a place out of state that will do them for a little less, I still have to deal with the high cost of Shipping.

Just wanted to pass this along to you !

BTW: My Son has his own small 'Plastic Chroming' business going & can do just about any plastic pieces, as long as they're not real big. His prices for the plastic chroming are about a third the cost & he can also 'Vacuum Metalize' small metal parts as well. His business is called "Chrome-Reflections", if anyone is interested.

WHAT WAS I THINKING ?

I think I mentioned about Copper. Well, I just remembered, they don't use copper in Chrome Plating Anymore What was I Thinking ???

As for Paying High Costs for Quality. I really don't know the Quality of these shops I went to. Just went to them to see what they'd charge. Sad part is ..... you pay that kind of money & it's NOT quality work & NOW you're fighting with them, for your money back.

Like you say ...... Y do U think so much stuff comes from Asian Companies ?

Default Yup!

Had my lug nuts rechromed, due to the crappy plating that was on there(asian plating no doubt). Advanced plating in Tennessee did the work,300.00 for 20 lugnuts...Looking good though....Pic with new ones vs old ones...[IMG][/IMG]

This thread should almost be in the political section...every time I hear something like this I just cringe. Our beloved government is regulating our hobby out of existence...if you love your old cars please think very carefully about who you vote for next year..."The road to hell is paved with good intentions".

To quote one of my least-favorite of all politicians,

If Obama and the EPA have there way our classics will be outlawed unless we convert our vettes to run on Lithium batteries

The liberals already tried to place pretty serious restrictions on classic cars here in Maryland aka the Peoples Republic of Maryland. Has not happened yet but rest assured the liberals are plotting their attack.

Bill; Sometimes, I wonder what the hell those politicians are thinking when they come up with some of the stuff they propose.

America's turning into one big Coffin & they keep putting more & more nails in, pounding down the lid.

Yea you can thank the 'tree huggers" for the high prices.
They fly all over the United States wasting fuel and resources like paper for leaflets to tell you your using up the earth's resources by eating off paper plates!
