Will an LS-6 intake fit under my stock 73 hood? Which performance intake would fit? Did they not punch out a few 70-71 LS-6 vettes with the stock big block hoods? The clearance on the 73 should be greater than the 68-72 BB hoods?
Hi 73 RP,
In looking at the pictures of the LS-5 and LS-6 manifolds, except for the fact that the LS-6 was alumnium, they appear to be the same height judging by the distance from the bottom of the air cleaner base to the valve covers.
So yes?
Regards,
Alan
The LS-6 intake is low. Many use the Torker II.
Yes, the 73-79 med. rise hood has more clearance.
The old Holley Street Dominator intake is another possibility.
The LS-6 intake is not a great power producer. Why Chevy put it onto the 70 Chevelle and then added a 2" spacer ring to seal the cowl industion aircleaner I will never understand when they had the 425HP 427 intake in inventory. I do understand that 427 intake was never going to fit under a Vette or Camaro hood but the Chevelle had tons of room.
the LS6 intake is a big square port manifiold, make sure it matches up to your heads, you may have oval port heads, most BB corvettes had oval port heads. you need to match up your heads to your manifold, or your manifold will continue to have the reputation of 'not a great power producer'.
Im not 100% sure about the 73-hood but its a bit higher than the earlier smallblock hoods isnt it?
I run a LS6 intake on my 454 under the stock 72 bigblock hood with OK clearence.
The LS6 are the same height as the iron LS5 intake.
The LS6 intake even works with a 1/2 inch spacer if you use the "L88" base for the aircleaner witch make the aircleaner drop even more.
HOWEVER.. There may be an issue with the carbs choketower getting to close to the filter lid when using the "L88" filter base, therefor i milled down the choketower on my Holley.
Works great for me.
