Can anyone tell me what year these valve covers come off of ? They are aluminum nine finned small block covers with Corvette on them. What are they worth? I have a guy that is willing to sell them to me and I need a base price. Thanks,
I assume these covers don't have pcv holes tapped into them. If you get them, you should also get a period-correct intake manifold with the oil fill cap/breather that sits atop a metal tube that that is affixed to the front center of the intake manifold (just forward of the coolant inlet. Gotta vent those crankcase vapors somehow/somewhere.
These early (C1) covers fit the 283 Corvette heads with staggered bolt holes. Ever look at the gaskets for SB's? thats what the 2 extra holes in the gasket are for. They fit ONLY those heads and will not fit a regular SB head. They are very cool looking though. I've often considered filling in that area on a set of conventional heads to accept bolts and use them. I have a set on my wall, but I have no idea what they are worth. They were a gift 20 yrs ago.
dman, thanks for the pic. If my memory serves me right that pic is the one. The only dif being the pic shows 7 fins and this guy says his are 9 fin. I'm gonna have to take another look at them.
Tedh, thanks for the info about the intake and covers breathing. I ASSumed these covers would have holes but now see they may not. I do love this forum. No reason to stay stupid for more than a week with this kind of info available. Thanks guys.
Here is some info I found while searching the Web for info on 9 fin valve covers. "In 1956 the optional engines had 9 fins on the valve covers. The 9 fin covers would be gradually phased out in 1957 and by 1958 all fined covers had only 7 fins. " I think I just might have to buy them. :D
