My motor is 1 day closer to being pulled. So I thought would run some of the numbers and see what work had been done to the car.
So far I can can tell that it is the Original block to my 74 L-48. But when I run the heads, I find found the following numbers:
(Passenger Side) 3970126 (The 9 is hard to see, looks like an 8 in some light)
(Driver Side) 3998993 (Hencho in Mexico)
Any thoughts on what when on here? Bad head replaced with a newer part number?
As it appears that they are not original, I assume they are not much "better' than original? I am looking at doing a top end kit and am sorting through whats worth keeping vs. whats worth selling and replacing with new..
As for the dates, I'll pull the covers again later and report back!
I guess its going to be hard to sell a mix matched set of heads...
The car ran OK in my eyes before I started tearing it apart. My friends who drove it said it was putting out a bit more than 190HP by the feel of it. I am aiming at 350 for the rebuild and am pretty sure that even these heads wont get me there...

Those heads and the stock cam will not get you to 350hp. You will need some new, good flowing heads and a performance cam to match with them. A better flowing exhaust will maximize the benefit of those components, as will a high flow intake manifold. There is no need to replace the Q-jet, but the rods/jets will need to be changed to match the fuel needs of your newly modified engine.
If you are going to do a complete engine rebuild, pistons with a higher compression ratio would add some more power; but you would want to buy aluminum heads to allow you to use premium pump gas and still get the performance you want without having pre-ignition problems and/or the need to use octane enhancers in your fuel.
