I'm in the process of restoring 72 Corvette, has not been driven for 27 years. I have replaced dry rotted tires and have removed all 4 calipers to rebuild. After removing brakes when I tried to move car it feels like the wheels are locked, clutch may be frozen to flywheel but car was in neutral....any ideas what the problem might be? Engine will not start so I need to roll car onto trailler to transport to shop.
Drop the drive shaft to the transmission, this will help start to isolate the issue. If it rolls its the issue is forward the rear axle if it doesn't the issue is in the axle or bearing.
This happened to me with the first Corvette I purchased... C2... basically same brakes as C3... the parking brake cables were rusted solid with the parking brake applied. The pb shoes and hardware were also rusted, but the cables were the primary culprit.
You need to remove and lube/refurbish ALL of that 'stuff' anyway. New wheel bearings (in front), if they are rusted/frozen, new U-joints, etc. You will not be lucky enough to just drive it away.
Lots of great ideas, I was thinking that it might be the u-joints etc but had not considered the parking brake, probably the best solution is to tackle them one at a time...thanks guys for all the replies!
My 72 was last driven in 94. I bought the car and dismantled it for a full restoration. PB could be the issue, but old dried up grease in wheel bearings and u joints could contribute to the problem. Also found that my diff. carrier bearings were pitted and would have been a problem had I not rebuilt it.
