Default LOOSE BLINKER HANDLE

my blinker handle is loose and sloppy...signals work ok as do hi and low beam but the handle has about 2 inches of slop in it...
can this be tightened or does it need to be replaced??

If I recall it is riveted ... I guess you can re-rivet.

My '79 has the same problem. I don't know if there's any difference but supposedly there's two types of levers for 1979, straight and bent. Mine's bent.

I've read in post from the past that you can supposedly pull the lever straight out. I have cruise control on my car so I'm afraid I'll rip out the wiring from the harness if I pull too hard. Good luck with it.

Well, if it's like my '78, you can just pull it straight out--it's only held in by a spring-loaded ball on the side. I had cruise & just pulled until it popped out, plenty of slack in the wires. Then I squirted loctite all over it and jammed it back in. No more slop (though I didn't have a whole lot of slop--mostly it just turned freely so the bent part would move up and down and it was hard to engage it).

My 78 has the same problem. Any idea what the cause is? Has the spring become weak, or is the lever worn?

ok...this morning when i got to work (didnt want to risk no blinkers on the way to work!) i pulled straight out on the handle (mines bent too) and it came right out...there are no wires attached to it...and there is no ball on the end...
there IS however a little, rectangle "bump" on the top of it that i asume is to keep it from twisting like it is doing...
my quess is that the groove that the "bump" slides into is what is worn thus allowing it to twist...
it was covered with a layer of grease, i have no idea why...
monday at work i plan on cleaning off the grease as well as cleaning the grease out of the hole, probably with solvent and a Q Tip and trying the lock tight idea...
i will let you know how this works...
thanx ya'll !!

Have the same problem on my 1979. Was told by a Chevy Parts Dept. that
the problem is a cracked or worn pivot assembly. I purchased
one and a new lever but have not had the courage to install it. The
pivot assembly requires taking apart the steering column to replace it.
Would like to know how the job is done.

Go to http://www.corvettefaq.com and look under Steering. There is a Standard (non-adjustable) Column paper as well as pictures and also a Tilt & Telescoping Column paper with pictures. They have sections that particularly address replacing the dimmer pivot.
