Default 1979 Steering column issues

Hello all once more.

So I've decided to tear apart the steering column and replace a few bits there, among them the turn signal switch and lever which was broken when I bought the car.

Now here is my issue: putting it all back together, I've used Jim Shea's documents and they've helped however now I have a major issue: something popped and flew off the turn signal lever area and it does click into position anymore now it just hangs there.

Does anyone have a diagram or image of that area and what should be installed to the turn signal lever?

From your description it sounds like one of two possibilities:
The turn signal switch has to leaf springs on the hazard warning switch end of the switch. The one that is flat, (not the one on edge) is the one that detents when you have the switch in right or left turn.

Since you have a 1979, the actual turn signal switch is attached to your turn signal lever by a crossover arm shown in the following picture. The arm has a small roller that engages the dimmer pivot and attaches to the turn signal switch by one screw (again shown in the picture.)

Thanks a lot Jim! By any chance, do you have a graphic that shows how the little brass-colored arm (Sorry for not knowing the name), which I believe ignites the long headlights, is attached.

As in, what that piece is attached to. Again, thank you very much!

Here is a blowup of a tilt steering column. It is quite close to your 1979 Corvette T&T.


Please see if you can identify the rod you are talking about by name and number.

If you are talking about the ignition switch actuator rod #35, the pin on the end engages the rack #36.

Thanks a bunch again. It's way past twilight where I live and I've got a bunch of homework to do so for today I'm done. The turn signals are working beautifully, the only thing that's not yet done is the long headlights and for some reason the hazard lights ignite but they don't turn off. That's a different battle though.

EDIT: The rod I'm talking about doesn't go anywhere near the ignition, it's the rod which engages/disengages the long headlights. When you push the turn signal lever forward to engage the long headlights, the lever pushes the rod back. The rod does look a lot like the ignition switch actuator rod, but it's on the opposing side of the ignition.
