Even when Im not in the market to buy a car, for some reason Im always drawn to looking at for sale ads...been this way since Im in my teens, and 20 years later still do it.
Aside from all of the cars that have 5 bazillion miles that are all highway miles. and Ice Cold A/C, why is it that almost any remotely hot rod type car has a "Corvette engine".
Now I know obviously its to get the less informed buyer to become very excited, but seriously, it grows kind of tired after a while.
I wonder how many Corvettes have really had their motors removed and placed in random 1983 Cutlass Supremes with B/M megashifters and Jegs stickers plastered on the windows.
Way to funny. When we bought our '74. The motor was out of the car on a engine stand. It had been installed in an early Chevy truck that the grandson had sold. The guy that bought the truck had a big block motor already and paid him $500 bucks less without the "CORVETTE MOTOR" . Then we bought the Corvette from his grandmother with the matching VIN motor on the stand. Saved from BUBBA!! .
I had a 58 Chevy stepside truck that the PO said had a Vette motor in it when I bought it. Upon building it to show we swapped out the tired motor. I bought a 4 bolt shortblock 350, put some fuelie heads a cam and all the rest from the old motor. It was WAY faster than the "Vette" motor. (I wish I still had that truck...and the other 50-60 hotrods I have sold through the years)
My '70 Camaro Z28 has a REAL L82 Corvette engine from a '79 Corvette, so I can "proudly" say that it has a Corvette engine!
I got only the short block from a parted out '79 and I added a 64 cc heads and a high left/duration cam, so I can smoke the tires the whole 1st and most of the 2nd.
Hi BBD,
I agree... very interesting.
I think it started even earlier, in the fifties/early sixties; when a Corvette was wrecked and the engine, (maybe even a 340 horsepower, or a 270 horsepower, but with 2 four barrel carbs), bcame available for a few hundred dollars.
Even a teenager with just a few tools could make the transplant happen! And HIS car had a CORVETTE engine!!!!
Good old days!
Regards,
Alan
Good point... I think everytime a car says "corvette" any where in the title it just means you will pay more for it! Look how much it cost for a simple valve cover that says corvette $130+ yet you can buy generic ones for $20 that don't have corvette on them. Similar to Harley.... if it says Harley add hundred to the price
Plus, I put a LS1 in my vette... not the "corvette LS1" either but the camaro. Both engines are similar except in a few areas but the camaro LS1 was way cheaper than a similar one from a 01-04 vette.
I gave my 1980 L82 to my friend for his 1957 Chevy, & helped him install it. The Vin tells the story. I wouldn't give a dime for one of those boat anchors. Have a great one. Gene

And yet, when someone is trying to sell a 4th gen Camaro, any V8 car has a "corvette" motor even if it is the stock motor for the car. Just because it is an LS1 doesn't mean it is a corvette motor.
