Aussie John has the correct reply. The column can be collapsed safely with a piece of wood/aluminum between it and a hammer or a rubber mallet. Borgeson spells thsi out in teh instructions. Safety is not a concern. Plus, I will think thru the u-joint vs. the rag joint before moving forward.
