MSD Atomic EFI.anybody? thoughts?
searching for something to play with...found this.
OK , it's expensive , just an "improved carb" and not a true EFI, but why not at the end...
anybody going for that?
I like the idea of keeping my engine bay vintage looking ( the atomic is hidden by the air cleaner, no fuel rails)
i like the idea of playing with A/F ratio and timing easier
i don't like :
i don't think it will self-adjust the advance as a modern efi does
the advance is not controlled by a knock sensor ( i would like this)
i doubt that it will work fine with a radical cam like mine ( ZL1) and very low vacuum ( just 6" HG). Am i wrong?
instructions and infos here

You could also get a big block TBI and a megasquirt and run that cheaper.
Air cleaner would cover the TBI and the MS can control the timing or you can run a vacuum Dist.
megasquirt and other contollers give end users a lot of F/I options now.

It's USB or fuggetabouit.....

They use what they can get, control easy, and keep the price down. They also list adapters to convert to USB. Many use USB so its not a big issue.

I like the idea of the Atomic EFI, but I think they over priced it.
If your engine makes over 525 hp, then your going to spend about $2600.
The Holley Avenger EFI is a better value at just over $2000.
I also like the FAST EZ EFI, but it wont control timing. The Holley and MSD kits will.

I thought the newwer EZ EFI did control timing? They even sell Dist on their site. could be wrong i only looked at them for a short while before I settled on a microsquirt.

You can do it yourslef for less than $800.
Megasquirt + big block TBI + some sensors and adapter for the TBI = <800
There is also http://www.dynamicefi.com/ which alows you to modify a GM computer. I like Megasquirt better but there are other DIY options.

TBI is over 20 year old technology. Adding spark control makes it somewhat better. It wont make any more hp than a carb and milage is only marginally better.
If I was thinking about spending $2600 to ad FI to a small block, I would seriously consider going for a used GM 5.3 or 6.0 vortec with SFI.
If you search around you can find GM tbi swaps very cheap, but I'm not sure if they were worth the effort.

I just did a Holley HP TBI install on a '65 Vette with a nasty solid roller 388" motor. Got an article coming soon in Auto Enthusiast on it. It was just like you want.....wanted to use original intake etc. The thing runs incredible even with a big cam with a tight LSA. It self tunes or lets you do anything you want and you can add all the features you want. It does require a return line..which isn't super fun..but not too big of a deal. I haven't played with the Atomic yet..but plan to in the future..so can't really say anything bad about it. The concept looks good...but there are limitations to a non-return system.
