column interlock cable
Just bought a 71 350 automatic (TH 400). The previous owner had the trans rebuilt. It works fine but I noticed that the shifter interlock cable had been deliberately cut at the transmission end. What is the function of this cable? Should I replace it and connect both ends? Thanks very much for your answer/opinion.

The interlock cable's purpose is for a theft deterent. When it's operating correctly, the trans cannot be shifted out of park with the ign switch off. The switch cannot be turned off unless in park.
