Well I pulled the trigger and bought a Richmond kit off of a member here. It comes with the Long shifter, driveshaft and tranny mount bracket, so I won't have to worry about those things. I already have a bell housing and pedal assembly. I think I'm going to be around $1500 less with this setup then If I bought an auto to manual TKO kit, and I won't have to touch my rear end. so figure another $1000 savings there.
with that 2.87/1 rear gear you are going to absolutely love the setup. Mine has a 3.08/1, and first gear does not last very long befor you have to shift, but you will love the power you feel in the seat of your pants.
I have the 6 speed and 370s and I only use 6th on the highway I run little of 2000 rpm in 6th at 70mpg. I like the combo not only does it jump out of the hole but is excellent on the Highway
OK TO bump this up again, I need some help on a Richmond trans for a 72 with a stock 350 and 3.70 gears.
What first gear ratio should I be looking at? I WIl never have it on the strip, just a little fun from stop light to stop light, and tons of 75 mph highway miles.
I had a Richmond 6-speed with the 3.27 1st gear and a 3.70 rear gear. It had awesome acceleration in 1st gear, but it was really geared too low for the street. To answer your question, I would go with the 3.01 or 2.77 1st gear and the .62 6th gear. And go with the 6 speed. Cost is just slightly more than the 5 speed and you get better gear spreads. Good luck.
Forget the 5 speed with a 3.70 rear. You'll need to be shifting out of 1st halfway through an intersection and spinning almost 4000 rpm on the highway.
Get a TKO with around 2.8 1st and 0.64 5th. Or you can get the Richmond 6 speed with similar gearing.

I can't wait to get it installed. It seems a lot of people on here go with Tremics or the new Keisler line of trannies, but for me the Richmond seemed like the only reasonable choice. I know a lot of people regard them as old school, but our cars are old school.
I have about 90% of my parts in hand or on order. I'm going with a hydraulic clutch from American Powertrain. All I have left to buy is a new starter, speedo cable, and a few other small items. The hardest part is going to be modifying the crossmember.

FWIW, the Richmond SS 5-speed/OD, with 2.89:1 1st puts a 3.54 or 3.70 at 10.23:1 or 10.69:1 total 1st gear multiplication respectively, has better steps than the other two optional 1st's, and the 0.77 5th puts the 3.54 and 3.70 rears at 2.73:1 and 2.85:1.

Any suggestions???
You would be a candidate for the Richmond Super Street 5 speed overdrive, but definitely not the 5 speed non-od. Not sure if the fit of the overdrive is as easy as the 6 speed and 5 speed non-od.

With 3.70 rear gears, I think a Richmond 6 speed with 2.77 first gear and .76 6th would be perfect. Or the Richmond Super Street OD 5 speed with 2.89 first and .77 5th.
Or you could just go with a TKO600 and have an easier swap.

WHY is this an easier swap? From what I have read it takes some aftermarket or extras that dont come with it?? I am a "hobby mechanic" so it takes me about 50 times longer to do something than the average guy, but I do enjoy doing it. So, how is it an easier swap?

It's an easier swap because you can buy a kit with EVERYTHING needed. So if you want to get it done quick, you can call up one of the vendors, put your order in and have the whole thing done pretty quick.
The Richmond swap is a little harder because no one sells a transmission mount that bolts right on. You'll have to weld something up. Besides that, it's pretty much the same.
