I have a 79 corvette and I attempted to remove the left rear brake light bulb by twisting it from the socket. I twisted the glass portion of the bulb off from the metal but the metal portion of the bulb is still in the socket and I cannot remove it. How should I go about removing the metal portion from the socket? It seems like it is fused to the socket. Also I noticed a tab in the socket that looks like it can be pushed in with a small screw driver, I tried pushing this tab down and taking some needle nosed pliers to remove the metal. No luck. So my next question was the bulb supposed to be removed by twisting it from the socket or pushing in the tab and pulling it out?
[I'm assuming you mean the brake lights on the rear of the car...not the one in the dash.]
Disconnect the battery FIRST. Then, just get a pair of small needle-nosed pliers, grab the bulb housing, and twist it out. If that doesn't get it, clean out the interior of the bulb housing, find a wooden rod of diameter that will fit into that housing (or wittle it down to fit), and epoxy the dowel rod into that bulb housing. Let it cure, then twist it out.
