Need help!!
I just bought a NOS Mitsubishi stereo for my '81. The stereo is a 4 ohm unit. The speakers in the car are 10 ohm. I'm not getting any sound at all. Do I need to get 4 ohm speakers or what? Any thoughts will be appreciated.
The 10 ohm speakers are not the problem. A 10 ohm load on a 4 ohm output would just make the power output from the amp considerably lower. But, you should still have plenty of power to hear the output.
I suspect the problem may be with how the speakers are wired [electrically] into the system. The original speaker wiring had the 'low' side of the system connected to chassis ground (I believe). Some of the newer systems do not [and cannot] have speakers connected to chassis ground.
I suggest you research how the speakers are wired into the system and alter as necessary.
And, there is always the possibility that the lights and tuner are getting powered up...but the amp is not.
If the stereo is powering up, then the speakers and their connections need to be checked. It could be the outputs on the head unit.
You can certainly get help on this part of the Corvette Forum but you may want to go over to the Audio/Electronics part of the Corvette Forum, those guys eat, live and breathe stereos.
Being a non GM head unit It might be a unit that has external amps to power the speakers, why did you buy that particular model for a vette instead of Pioneer, Sony Clarion,ETC???

Believe it or not, I bought it because I wanted to keep the look as close to original as possible. Thought maybe this was a period correct replacement upgrade. If I can't get this figured out I'd appreciate any suggestions for a replacement, keeping in mind that I don't want to cut up the console. I'd like to keep the original look, yet upgrade in performance.
