Rebuilding a T5.
Got the chance to pick up a T5 box and assorted other bits
(some I wouldn't need anyway) for 50 bucks.
Seller tells me he took it to a local shop and they told him
the box looks great inside exept the reverse gear
is stripped.
So here's my questions...
Is this worth buying and having it repaired ????
Also, can a T5 internals be upgraded ????
I'm wanting to go 5 speed but I'm in no hurry,
if I did buy this, it would still be awhile before I'd be
installing it.
Just figured this might be a good place to start
(obtaining the parts I'll need).
Looking forward to your (always) helpful & humorous replies.

Where did you get this? I'd also like to go 5 speed, but my budget is well under a grand, which means I'll be staying 4 speed unless I can find a deal like that. From which car did it come?

As far as upgrading, there are aftermarket parts for servicing the T5 including upgrading. Not sure of availability and cost where you are located and it could be cheaper to find a stronger unit if what you have turns out to be a low power unit or the service parts cost more than a quality used unit.

I bought a broken (3rd as always) WC T5 (from a Iroc-Z '91 camaro) and changed the internal myself. Namely a 3rd gear and a countershaft.
I put regular (USA/Mexico original tremec part, no chinese) gears, but choosed to buy the heavy duty case from G-Force.
From what I heard the main reason for T5 to fail is that the case is too thin and flex, spreading the gears apart.
Anyway, a broken T5 is probably a T5 than flexed its case, so you'd better change the it anyway.
Watch out, this case comes with the ford style mounting holes drilled, you'll have to get the GM style hole drilled yourself, and those must be precisely drilled, unless you Trany won't be correctly aligned.
My solution was to cut and resurface the front face of the old case and use it as template (still got it, can sale).
With those parts and a rebuild kit it costed roughly the price of a rebuilt one, but I know what's inside.
If you do the rebuilt, get a repair video, with it it's piece of cake, without it's impossible not to do something wrong.
When came the time to tune the endplay of both shaft, I got to admit my mechanic buddy help was invaluable to machine me the perfect sized shim.
It not the easiest way, but you get a quality rebuild for a good price.
All in all the whole swap costed me roughly 1500$, including a lakewood scattershield, short throw shifter and flywheel/clutch/pressure plate assy.
Found it on feebay and he only lives around the corner from me.
From what he told me it's from a (Aussie) AU Ford Falcon.
I just sent him an email to find out what engine etc it was.
Hopefully he'll get back to me soon.
I'll let you know what I find out.
Thanks again.

The car it came from was a 2000 AU XR6 ute
(my American friends wont know what the heck that is).
"13-52-065-908 TREMEC borgwarner automotive is all thats on the box"
Been doing some searching, only info I can find is that this box comes from
a "Ford 1984 Mustang/Capri 5.0 V8" so I'm guessing that Ford Australia
might have used this box too.
Cheers,
