I agree, Red Turbo as well as Norval and whoever has those big superchargers, like the guy above with the 7 second(!) car get my vote. Until Merlin and I get our cars finished and actually run them, and get some 1/4 mile and dyno numbers, it's all speculation. There are too many nice cars, ultra-high horsepower or not, to say who has the strongest c3. There are many cars on this forum that I'd consider trading mine for.
I believe it is very quickly followed by rolling about 10000 times!
Help me here.
I am trying to picture in my mind, "cruising" along at 110 mph and mashing the gas pedal in 4th (or top) gear...and going VERY sideways.
What does fishtailing feel like at 120 mph?
I have to agree with Norval. My torque curve is going to be ridiculous. Monty chose wisely with the turbo & 4L80E combo. I prefer shifting, so my choice will definitely cost me on the quarter mile times. I was talking with Chris the other day about all out power. If I were to strip off all the accessories, crank the boost up to around 30 psi & run 115 octane race gas, he thinks we could possibly get up to around the 1,800HP mark, but that is just a guess & would only be for the dyno. On the street we'll be around 1,200 or so with a torque curve like you've never seen. I kind of feel like doing it just for the sheer sake of the numbers, but at some point it gets kind of silly. Yes, that drag setup black vette will toast us all in the quarter because it's set up for drag racing & isn't a street car! Duh! Come follow some of us around a tight corner in that thing. OK, this post is about strongest so he definitely belongs in that group. I also might put some slicks on mine & go out to the track for a try at some quarter mile times, but that is going to be a mind bending attempt to not break parts & not break me! So, to recap. That 7 second jobber is clear winner in the quarter. There's probably a few others like that around the country. For the street cars, Norval is king & has been for some time. There's still quite a bit of mystery ahead of us for both Monty & myself. Mine is set up to not only go fast straight, but handle & go REALLY fast top end. I'm pretty sure Monty will be quicker in the quarter. I honestly don't think there are any other cars that will hit the top speeds mine will - mainly because we've done all the aerodynamic work & once those dual blowers open up - look out! With really high gearing like I have in that 6 speed, it takes torque to push the car. We have LOTS of that. If I can run with Norval & Monty in the quarter - even if I'm behind them some AND be able to handle like crazy & do 250 mph+ runs, I'll call the project a success. I think we need some MPG's of the top power kings smoking some tires & making some noise all at once!!!
Maybe I should have been more clear I was refering to streetable cars.Even though that black drag vette is just plain awesome.I will be happy to own a vette and build something different motor wise.I will be happy with 500 hp.(happy for awhile).I don't know what engine combo I would use,but a small block 427 is a dream of mine.
Steve, 250+ mph? Damb, that's fast! I don't care what the plane ticket costs, I have to be there for that one
Actually, there's a C3 drag car at my local strip that looks just like that black car (but not nearly as nice). I really get a kick out of watching that C3 pull the front wheels a few feet off the ground. My wife just looks over at me and says "forget about it!"
What differential and axles are you running? I just send a spare 3.08 rear to Tom's yesterday for a HD rebuild. Since he can't get to it for 3-4 weeks, I have some time to decide which options I want (I wish I could afford them all :()
Hey Monty, are you going to push all that turbo hp through the stock '82 rear end? You're a brave man
I am using a '82 IRS rear, but I've made some modifications, and have some left to do. I'm upgrading the spindles and yokes to Tom's 30 spline units, and I'm getting halfshafts from Denny's Driveshafts that use the larger 1350 ujoints. The diff is a stock, but rebuilt Dana44 with 4.11 gears. With only a 3000rpm stall, and street/road race type tires, it shouldn't launch too hard as the turbo's don't really start coming on hard until 2500-3000 rpm or so. I've still got the indea in my head of having a 9" diff built with stub axles/yokes and having custom halfshafts made, but that will have to wait until next winter. I definitely intend to keep it IRS in one form or another. I've got too much money and effort in the suspension to improve handling, I wouldn't want to sacrifice that just to improve my 1/4 times.
The mystery man with the 14-71 blown 632 and highly built th400 is Mike from Kansas. He's currently running the 74 in IHRA Outlaw with a best time of 7.20 at 190. He said that his combo is making 1400 horsepower and 1200 torque at 2800lbs. He's very knowlegable about drag racing and is willing to share info on what is good and what is not. Look for him this coming year in a 63 pro-mod Corvette. One thing that he told me that put a smile on my face was the fact that his Vette was so fast that when someone was foolish enough to race him it was all over in just over a second or two. Like I've said before, you can have all the power in the world but if you can't get it to the pavement it's worthless. Mike's car is a great example of horsepower managed properly.
Until he turns the wheel that is. Then it will be a good example of horsepower in the trees. I don't know, drag cars are what they are. They are good for one thing only - going very fast in a straight line. I respect that, but I want more. Much much more....
