The 200r is the better fit for the 77 no cutting of the drive shaft and no other mods.
and the crossmember will fit.

Check out Bowtie or find one locally and have a local shop go through it for you..

I called Bowtie. The guy I talked to (by the way he was so good I almost bought on the spot) told me the transmission I need is the 700R4. Transmission plus everything I would need to install it...2K! Seemed reasonable. Now if I can figure out what damn engine to go with. Hard not to want 450HP!

$2K for the whole deal, with shorter drive shaft, sounds pretty good to me. If your car's originally an auto, shouldn't be a big deal moving the tranny crossmember back a bit. If originally a 4-speed, gonna be a little more work. Maybe inquire about a 4L60E, and control module while at it. Quite honestly, wish I'd taken this route. Playing with the 700R4's TV cable and governer for proper shift points, can be a real pain.

with the 2004 you dont have to cut the shaft or move the crossmember

also if you do it yourself you will need the pressure gauges that they sell to start the warranty.. you have to call in the gauge readings before the the warranty can start.

Based off the article you posted. The 2004 seems easier. Wonder why he led me the other way.

Vendor surely led you to a 700R4/4L60, because these are far more common. Not to many 2004R's around. The latest 700R4/4L60E version was still in production, up to a few years ago. 2004R production is long gone. They've all been superceeded by 6L65E and 6L80E 6 speeds now. These can be another transplant option, but hear they're physically quite large. As mentioned earlier, having the driveshaft shortened, and moving the crossmember back, really isn't much of a deal.

That's funny. For a 77 Corvette, the 700 isn't the "right" transmission either.
Isn't the whole reason for Bowtie Overdrive's existence to help people put the "wrong" transmission into their cars?

Ok I agree after reading the post that you have the better solution. Will make the final decision tomorrow on Engine. One last questions. With the ZZ4 and the afore mentioned manual transmission, are you replacing the clutch and bellhousing? Flywheel?

I am planning to swap out my motor as well, I have an 81. I just can not make up my mind wheather to go with the ZZ4 or the hotZZ383, it is just several hundred dollars more. I have already purchased a level 2 700r4 form Mad Dog Transmissions. This is the tranny that I want. A friend of mine made the swap for his 80 with the exact tranny and he gets mid 20s on the freeway and just a bit over 20 in the city, but he did the math.

Have you taken any consideration of the gear ratio of your differential? Because the diff is really the difference. If your gear ratio is around the 2:70s/2:80s you will over work your engine, so find out what your gear ratio is. I bought a 3:54 ratio differential from Ikerds, because not only do I want to feel the HP but gas mileage as well, at 4th gear with the 700r4 it brings down the ratio to what my current ratio of my 2:72 diff is at in 3rd gear, which is pretty good on gas for a sports car. Things to think about. There are some good gear ratio math calculators on line. The 4th gear in a 700r4 is .72 and not 1 to 1 like the turbo 350 3rd gear. The engine runs cooler as well. yes you will have to cut the drive shaft, but you have to look at the big picture. If for some reason you needed work on your tranny in the future, parts are a lot easier to get and less expensive for a 700r4, because they are more common, so the price of cutting a drive shaft is just pennies as far as I am concerned.

I thought about this before I planned on throwing all kinds of dollars in my car, I just have a motor decision to make.
