I’m going to be fattening up the mixture on my Q-jet. To do so, I have to remove the top of the carburetor. Remove the long bolts and nine screws (two inside the barrels) to lift off the top of the carb. The main metering jets are under the floats right, right? Will this change the float level after the floats are re-installed? It appears a screwdriver can be used, or are special tools necessary for removal and installation of the jets? The linkage for the accelerator pump looks like it could complicate things a little. What’s the best way to disconnect it for removal of the top of the carb?
you can use a punch to get the pin pushed back to remove the accelerator pump link. don't drive it so far back that you can't pry it back with a screwdriver. you can remove the jets with a screwdriver that fits properly. if yourcareful you wont change the float level but check it anyway.get a book, cliffs is good.
All was going well until i lifted out the float and a silver piece fell into the fuel bowl. I assume it's the needle valve. I don't see how it came so In am uncertain how the re-install it.

The clip on the top of the needle hangs on the back of the float, where the little notch is. Do not hang it from one the holes in the arms - doing so will cause the needle to not seat well.
It may look like the needle will easily fall off the float when it's just hanging on the back, but it won't fall off, that's the way it goes.

Thanks, I now have it hanging off the back of the float in that manner.

For step-by-step instructions on what you're doing, simply e-mail me a request for my Q-Jet Setup Paper - it was a section specifically for replacing the jets. It also has a "Quickie Performance Setup" section that you may be interested in.
