I'm orderering new leaf spring center mount bolts for my '72 SB. The car has the 9 leaf spring which is what the NCRS Technical information manual and Judging Guide says is correct. ZIP and other supplier catalogs only offer 9/16 bolts for the 1968-1977 9 leaf spring however my car takes 7/16. The differential and the cover plate both have the correct date codes for a 1972. The center mount plate bolt holes are sized to accept 9/16 but the cover plate is threaded to receive 7/16.
Has anybody else experienced this? Thanks for your help.
Hi dv,
The info I have indicates the four bolts should be 9/16"-12 x 3 1/8" for 63 to 77 cars. The change to 7/16" bolts was for 78-79 cars.
It sounds like some how your car has the later rear cover on it.
I didn't think the cover was dated... just the carrier case casting.
So ???
Regards,
Alan
How wide is your spring?
In 78 they went to 2 1/2" wide springs simply by going to the smaller bolts.
Like said, you SHOULD have 9/16" bolts if original.
