noticed my ammeter gauge was showing a bit low, went to test battery and it only showed 11.5 and then went to test the alternator. When I grabbed the BATT lug rubber boot the lug had a lot of looseness to it. I tried to peel back the boot and there was an arc so I turned the car off and unhooked battery. The freakin lug was completely loose in the housing of the Alt. So i took it loose and pulled the alt from the car. The Lug pulled out and then when I turned the alt up the bolt fell out of the back. Holy crap.... for real? I'm gonna take it back today at lunch. Have you guys seen this happen before?
This is an alternator from autozone, duralast gold for a 1996 impala SS that I installed in my 1972.

Did you verify that you didn't accidentally fry the fusible link when the power wire grounded out on the case? If it was a split second arc then you're probably fine. Wrap some tape around the end of that battery wire and reconnect the battery. Make sure everything still works. If not, you'll be needing a new fusible link too.
