Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with these rotating type engine stands?

I have two; both rotate; neither are geared. I paid about $40 a piece. Do you need a gear drive? How often do you intend to use them?

Have been using mine for years with no problem, held my 454 and a couple of 327's as well. No need to spend the big bucks, shop around or watch for sales, I think I paid about $75 a few years back. There are alot of them out there and they all work fine. Just make sure you get one with the wider stance at the front.

I agree with OldSarge on the wide stance BUT make sure if your using a portable shop crane, that its front legs will fit past the engine stands legs.
Otherwise trouble will insue. Ask me how I know.

Mine is from Harbor Freight and has the splayed front legs. No crank but I don't think it is necessary. I put some grease on that bore and it turns easily even with my Mopar A engine. They also had a nice drip pan to go underneath it. Very handy. 2000lb capacity.
