I am getting ready to place an order for my transmission for my '78... I read on here somewhere that TH350s for Corvettes are a Corvette specific transmission. Is it not just a 6 inch tailshaft and bolt right in?
This is the transmission I have in mind, But now I am uncertain if it will drop right in. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TCI-311000/
Any help is appreciated, and the sooner I have a solid answer the sooner I can be back on the road again :-)
the 78 trans. is not corvette specific & the # you mention will bolt right up. i recently replaced mine with a B&M #113001 from summit. no installation problems.
You do of course know, the mentioned TCI unit is a bit beefed up semi race unit. Since you're starting from scratch I'd check around a bit, for a 700R4 or 2004R od unit. 700R4's are more common with a lower 1st gear, but will require a shorter drive shaft, and cross member mounting work. The less common 2004R should drop right in. Of course there's gonna be some shift linkage/TV cable adjustments, but will be all worth it, droppind highway cruise rpm 30%. I haven't used a non od transmission in years.
Awesome thanks for the info guys. I ordered the transmission. I stuck with the Turbo350 that I posted. I am changing the rear gears to 3.70s and I live on the island so an Overdrive tranny isn't really necessary at the moment. Not to mention I'm ready to drive this thing the day the tranny gets here, so I don't feel like dealing with shortening the driveshaft, adjusting the TV cable PERFECTLY changing the crossmember and so on. I want to just drop it in and go! If I decided to change my mind down the road I'm sure I can make a short project out of it.
