Default Trip Odometer

Hello All,
This is the first time I've have the cluster out of my 70 coupe. The PO supposedly had this car "restored", but it's more like a class in clown antics. Anyway, what am I missing here to get this trip odometer mounted correctly? This was just hanging back there and the hole for the cable on the face of the cluster was plugged with a rubber stopper. Nice.
Below are some pics for reference.
Thanks for the help!

Learn something everyday
I didn't know the 70 was different, mine goes down into the bracket and hangs under the dash.

Actually, I just looked and my bracket is the same as yours there
Are you sure it goes where you show it? The control for my vent (ball) goes there

Just at the lower left edge of this picture is where mine is, yours looks to be the same?

Mine could be wrong or different (72), but...

Nope Mooser.
I'm the noob here. You mean the vent ball has a control?? LOL! Man, I've got a lot to learn about where things originally go. I know, I need an AIM manual. It's on the list! Now everything makes sense! Is a vent control an option? Hell, maybe that rubber stopper in the hole was actually factory......great. Hmmmm.....where did I put that? Not the first time your pics have helped me out! Thanks Mooser!

Check your parts bins, you should have a piece that bolts behind the ball that looks something like this
(this is the pass side, drivers should be mirror image I believe)

I don't have a pic of the front side but the rod that goes through basically gets a ****/stem screwed on that looks like an old door lock pull

Maybe and AC car didn't have it, someone else will have to answer than one (I thought they all had it)

I think I'm understanding the big picture here Mooser. The PO had a Classic Auto Air installed on the car. It's still there and working. I think the kit maybe called for doing away with this vent adjustment mechanism. I can promise you that the vette has never had that mechanism on it since I've owned it. I'm so accustomed to finding Bubba's fingerprints all over my car, I just assume that he's fudged something else when it doesn't make sense to me. I'll give a point to Bubba this time. It's his only one so far in this 6month journey I've been on disassembling this car. Thanks again for the help Mooser!!

I installed Vintage Air in my 72, and the VA system did away with the vent control..the **** is still there for looks, but its not functional. Your trip odometer reset goes into the bracket like Mooser stated..

Here's the vent mechanism that was removed..driver's side.
