That's either your license plate light or spare tire light.

It's. The. Spare. Tire. Light.

There should be a bracket over the spare tire somewhere to mount it, it uses the same lens as the license plate light. How could it possibly be a "dome" light when it's behind the gas tank?

If your wiring diagram doesn't show the spare tire light, you need a better wiring diagram.

here is the diag. i have. the dome light is listed in the lower right 1/4 of page 2 with the tail light wiring. so if it is the spare tire light is it correct to come on when the door opens and off when it closes with the interior light?this is my first vette.i'm used to rebuilding camaros and chevelles.

You are missing this lens for the bulb. I believe it screws to the bottom/ center of the rear bumper to provide light for removing the spare tire while changing a flat.

Those generic diagrams can't always be trusted.

Is this what you are missing?

Kaps has the best pics

According to the owners manual when you turn the headlight switch counterclock wise the dome and spare tire light should come on.

It's the same lens/housing as the license plate light. Yes, it's on the same circuit as the dome and courtesy lights.

And then if you take a while to change the tire you have a dead battery.
