Default Headers concern

Hi? I just had my hedman longtube headers installed. The came in black color. After the installation i notice some burning smell. I checked it the headers. Now my headers looks like rusty or brownish. From where the header meet the engine down to where the four cylinders pipes meet and beyond that the black color is still there. Is this normal for hedman headers or they are going through their normal break in process.

The black paint is only a cheap shipping paint and burns off quickly. Left uncoated they will develop surface rust and eventually holes, but that would take many years depending on your environment and the amount of moisture in the exhaust system.

It's too bad the manufacturer's don't make it more clear that you need to strip the cheap paint off and either have them coated or use a high temp exhaust paint to make them last longer. It would still be a good idea to remove them, and strip and paint them properly.

High temp 2500 degree exhaust at most any parts store works well. Drawback is it comes in flat black since that's the only way to maintain the high heat characteristic. I can't remember the brand name but I don't think there are too many to choose from.

Both VHT and Rustoleum now make high heat header paint (1,300-2,000 degrees) that include ceramic particles in a variety of colors.

It does stink doesn't when the paint burns off. I did not repaint mine with a high temp paint and 11 yrs later they are still ok. Did you add an H pipe or X pipe to your setup?

I've tried most brands of high temp paints and some actually stay on a little while, but eventually burn off and leave the headers looking like rusty ole pipes. My dad had his ceramic coated bright alum. color and they still look great. Probably would have been money ahead to just buy coated headers to begin with.

Conventional wisdom says that you are better off with a free-flowing dual exhaust and the original ram's-horn exhaust manifolds, than a set of headers going thru the restrictive stock exhaust.

Had my Hedmans ceramic coated, looks like chrome and no discoloring after several years.
