I am attempting to install my Muncie and bell to the motor. When I slide the trans in it stops about a half of an inch before the bell hits mounting surface. I have never done this before so any help would be appreciated.
They are both currently out of car I am going to put in together. Thanks

Best to have a clutch alignment tool or spare input shaft (even better) so you can get everything lined up with the pilot bushing in the crank before attempting to install the trans, but if you have a way of releasing the clutch (as in pushing the pedal) while you slide the trans in you should be able to get there. Whatever you do, don't force the issue by tightening the bolts to pull things together.
FWIW, if assemblying any engine and bell combo that has never been together before (and sometimes even then) you necessarily should check concentricity and squareness of the bell to crackshaft centerline.
The engine and trans came out of a 1970 vette, the clutch is like new so it has not been taken off the flywheel. Shouldn't it go back in without having to realign disc? It is in gear should it be in neutral when I attempt again?
Put the trans in 4th gear before you install it. With the output yoke in place, you will be able to turn it and align the splines, assuming the clutch disc is perfectly centered on the flywheel. Check it first with an alignment tool, or a spare input shaft.
Has the trans in question ever been mated to the motor ? Does the clutch disc and input shaft have compatible splines ? I've always found it easier to do it separately, bolt the bell housing to the motor and then the trans to the bell housing but thats just me. Good Luck, Peace,,, moosie
Install bell housing to motor.
Select fourth gear by moving forward shift lever forward. Second shift lever should be almost straight up. Reverse shift lever forward.
Now get 3 4" long 1/2 inch bolts(IIRC) cut the heads off them.
Thread them into the bell/trans mounting holes. At the top right and both lower holes.
Stab trans using the headless bolts as alignment pins. If your clutch and pilot bushing are aligned the trans should slip right in, you may have to rotate output yoke to align splines.
If trans wont go that last 1/2" DON'T FORCE IT OR DRAW IT IN WITH BOLTS!!!
Use a ratchet strap attached to clutch fork and a rear frame hole , tighten the ratchet strap(simulating pushing the clutch pedal in).
After mating trans a bell. remove dowell pins and install proper bolts to req torque.
Here's a timesaver tip. Clean shifter rod threads and install shifter alignment tool prior to installing shifter.
I picked up the alignment tool it went in easy until the pilot bushing then it seemed tight. It went in all of the way but needed force to pull out. They are matching pieces from the same donor. I am attempting this on the floor of a garage they are not in car.
If the cheap plastic alignment tool binds, the input shaft probably wont fit. Unbolt the pressure plate and position the disk with the alignment tool. Be sure to use loctite and torque the pressure plate correctly.
