Out of concern and sympathy for my fellow CF member, I've consulted my trusted crystal ball.
After a gentle shake, I let the white stuff settle and can now see something. Yes it's all clear to me now... '75, your car has been through an interesting life. A variaty of colorful characters have been behind the wheel and in the right seat too.... ooo you might want to give that right seat a nice cleaning.
But that's not what we're looking for today. The engine, yes I can see the engine. Many colorful characters have worked on the engine. I can see one of them may have been the cause of your current dilemma. Yes, I see a bit of the future too! Many colorful characters will be involved in the diagnosis and repair of this engine.
To confirm this, I have consulted my ever insightful, always correct Magic Eight Ball. "Is this the answer we are loookinggg forrrr?" After at good shake, the Eight Ball tells us "The outlook is not so good".

Good one Rob.....
Back to the OP. I can tell you that I would have looked under the car while waiting for a tow, and would have been under there as soon as it hit my garage. A looksee is worth a thousand words.
It all happened suddenly... I think there may have been a knock.
In the morning i'll take photos and point out where the gasoline was pooled, right beside the air filter. All the oil was below/on the side of the motor - I'm not sure if it is only oil though.
I haven't attempted to turn the engine over yet.
If your air filter is right next to a header, then you have a very odd setup! The headers are the tubes that come off each side of the engine and go under the car, and connect to the exhaust pipes. The intake manifold is the part between the valve covers that the carburetor sits on top of. Is this what you mean?
OK, sport, it's now afternoon in 45% of the US.....where are the pics??
(if it were MY car, I wouldn't have been able to sleep, and would have had pics by 3 AM!)
I was thinking the same thing but the odds are that he's been greeted with evidence of a catastrophic failure and he may be too busy licking his wounds to post anything here.

You're probably right, but reading the posts by the OP, I gain the impression that he's not all that familiar with the inner workings of engines. Therefore he may not have a handle on what actually happened, and whether or not it's all that catastrophic.
That extra ventilation should help keep the block nice and cool. Well, on the bright side it looks like you have an opportunity to learn a lot now if you're not afraid to get your hands dirty.
