That's what I'm hoping.

Can anyone give me an idea of what needs to be replaced (apart from the oil pan)? I'm just now beginning my research.

Looks to me like it threw a rod. Engine is toast for sure. Time to rebuild / replace it.

The last time I had one do that, the only reusable parts other than external stuff were the intake manifold & one head.

Have you checked to see if you lost the antifreeze? That might an initial indicator as to whether the block is broken. At the very least you need a rebuild, likely a short block, maybe an entire engine.

Csierp, I'm sorry for you man. Three weeks into this new world and it's raining on your parade. If getting an older Vette was something you really have been looking to do as a hobby or whatever, don't let this kill your dream. It's going to happen to all of us in some way or another. Get some helpwith someone you trust in assessing the damage and set up a game plan. You've lived this long without one, if it takes a little while to get back on track, it won't be the end of the world. Good luck.

these days its usually cheaper to buy a crate than get your stuff rebuilt. Id bet at a minimum you'll be replacing the oil pan and rotating assembly. could be damage to the head on the side where it happened, good news is you get to tear into the drivetrain on your new toy.

The bad news is it's really broken. The good news, you can build more power now! You really won't know how bad it is until it gets taken apart. Pulling the pan will likely tel most of the story, but it'll very likely have to come out to be fixed or replaced. You can probably get away with a short block, but again, it'll have to come apart to know for sure.

The things that punched the hole in the oil pan and most likely the things they're attached to.

How mechanically inclined are you? If as you say just learning you might be better off to do as others have suggested and go with a new crate engine. They can range from $1400 up to $$$$$$$ all depends on your budget and performance goals. You may see if there is a local forum member(s) who understands these vettes that could come over and give you some straight up advice. I feel for you and hope it all works out. Post your city and ask for some local help.

Seems like this is uncharted ground for the OP. If you decide to buy a new engine, this will get you started:

http://www.summitracing.com/search/M...s/?Ns=Rank|Asc

There are also other suppliers....JEGS, Northern Auto, Scoggin-Dickey, etc.

here is exactly what you need to to do in order don’t worry about making it worse only a sledge hammer to the fiberglass will worsen your situation.

unbolt the pan and pull out any pieces of metal that you can.

post a picture of the broken pieces. not really necessary, you threw a rod but we love pictures and it would be nice to confirm.

then start pulling off the top end, carb, intake, headers, heads.

post pictures of the heads so we can tell you if they are reusable.

pray or sacrifice to what ever deity you prefer and post pictures of your cylinder walls. and the carnage from the underside personally I don’t think the block will be salvageable.

pull out the alcohol and the check book and decide if you want a whole new engine or just a short block. a short block is every thing minus the carb intake heads and headers.

sell any spare parts or kidneys you may have lying around

if you blew a rod that means it broke apart and banged up the inside of your block. your crank is toast and the piston probably did some damage to the head and cylinders.

I wish you luck and where are you located

My advice.

DON'T do the work yourself, you know very little about engines. It sounds like you barely know what we are talking about. Let someone who knows what they are doing do it right.

How many revs were you turning when it blew?

Excellent advice, and exactly what I would have said....

The OP said in his original post that he was going about 90 MPH. If his car had 3:55s, I would guesstimate that he was turning around 3800-4000 RPM.....

Yep, I forgot he said that. Probably a rod, bearings seized - who knows without actually seeing it's guts. But in the end, he's up for a new engine.
