Justin, you are correct, '68 was the first year for federal EPA BS standards....
now if they even knew what they were looking at, that would be nice....
it's all politically motivated, catering to the crybabies who controll media hype, and the story of arguement by exception....based on histeria....
however, the early first 7 years of that were before catastrophic converters and the really serious performance decreases.....
in '73 they started that EGR stuff to decrease the effective 'size' of the engine during certain operations....and the intake manifolds sucked during that era....or made the engine suck too much wasted power, small passages, poor performance and worsened fuel economy...
only ONE reason performance is back on track these days....computers and DPFI, NO other reason....but even that is taken to extremes these days....
only 2 computers necessary in a car....radio and engine controll..that's it...
but in classic overshooting the mark...what they have??? 11 something last count??? OK maybe Brakes and ancellary traction controll is another, but that's not mandatory.....
Not mandatory till 74 and some states allow a 25 year 'grace period' if you will. If your car is older then 25 years no smog check. If you look at any high performance catalog most will state that replacement engines are only legal in 73 and older cars. Now you all are following that rule right?
Yep, that's me here, my 77 hit 25 years this year and I promptly took out the "cats" and ran straight through 3" pipes....great sound and power! :smash:
WA has 25 year rule and in OR I'm out of the required rule area.
Oh yes...If I was rich, I would buy a C5 to go with my C3. If I had to choose, I'd take a C5, sell it and buy a C3 & C2 :yesnod:
This reminds me of when I had saved up a $10 grand "downpayment" for a new Z06 and got turned down due to the lack of credit...the jerk salesman tried to convince me that a cavalier would be a good buy. That's when I started looking for a used vette. And now that I have my 75, I realize that I should have been looking for a C3 all along...being 44 years old and graduated in 75 the Stingrays were THE american sports car when I was growing up. The "downpayment" was the only payment I needed for my vette, and I think I get a lot more looks in my Stingray...around where I live (around Microsoft HQ) there are a lot of C5's, but very few C3's.

Gee Whiz, 10 grand wasn't enough? What were they thinking?
Yeah, I bet there are a lot of C5's around Microsoft HQ along with BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari’s, and Porsche’s etc.
One reason I bought my 77 Vette was it was that year Seattle Slew won the Triple Crown. I was a big Seattle Slew fan.
ROCKIN ROLL , Thats why I got a 1966................Graduated high school in 66, joined the Marines in 66, & route 66 ....think ill go for a drive in my 66............... :seeya
When I began my Vette search I was looking for a good mid-year. They were expensive and it was hard to find a good driver in need of TLC. My dream Vette is a Silver 1963 Split window (I was born in 63 and remember my first toy car was a 63 coupe). Since I couldn't find a good mid-year I set my sights on a C3. I have always loved the way the fenders looked when you sit in it and look out the windscreen.....Classic. I, like alot of you, would take a C5 Z06 in a heatbeat and when they get more affordable in the future I may get one. I will never get rid of my C3 though. The looks and compliments I get on my car just driving it around town is priceless. As far as the C5 goes, it has taken the General 30+ years to match/exceed the performance of the L88 or the ZL-1 and the only way they can do it is with fuel injection and computers. Give me a good old carb and some headers and I am a happy camper.
