a month ago my neighbor bought a 2001
i have owned a c-3 ever since he has know me
he said i had a little bit to do with his choice , (getting a corvette)
I just bought a 71 project, now own a 78 and 71
he wanted to know why I did not just get a c-5
I told him there is $575 reasons for 84 months good reason
so what do you other c-3 owners think
two c-3 with titles should be worth one c-5 with payments anyday
Heck yeah! Don't get me wrong, the C5 is awesome but is in an entirely different class from the C3 if you ask me. Like comparing a 2wd truck to a full off road Hummer. C5 is like driving a nice, fast Lincoln Continental or something while driving the c3 is like driving a race car. I have never seen anything since the c3 body style that has the same sex appeal (well, Viper's are close).
I am with you both. The C-5 is awesome but so are those payments and insurance.A few of those payments will build one bad azz engine and pay for a lot of gas.And there isn't really anything more nostalgic than a C-3 vette.
Don't get me wrong. If I could afford a C-5 ZO6 it would be in the stable also.
I think if you ask people to close thier eyes, and describe a corvette, each person will describe wat a corvette is to them. for my brother, it's a C2. my Niece it's a c4. me, it's a red c3 convertible. one of the earlier ones with the stingray and lock on the side. I would much rather have a near show C-3 than a new Z06
I always have to pause a bit when I see your sig photo. Your car looks so curvaceous but taut at the same time. I love that smooth look, even better than my L88. I would just miss the power. The c3, and yours in particular, is a really classy car!
I had the privilege of driving my buddies 2002 C5 and was allowed to shake it out solo for an hour. The torque and 6 speed were a beautiful thing. It is a beautiful marvel of GM engineering and got looks. I came to the startling realization that Corvette is one of the few vehicles that has maintained roots to its original heritage while always going forward. Having said that, I found I could stand outside and admire his vette for hours, but inside there was no soul and I could hardly hear the engine. I could have been sitting in any new GM product. It gave me a new respect for my C3. Don't get me wrong, if I won the lottery I would probably drop the $70,000(Can.) and have a new C5 in the driveway, but I will always keep the C3 for the pleasure driving.
Before C5, some years ago, I dumped a C4 '87 on favor of my present C3 '72, several things, no EPA to worry about, so that leaves me free to hotrod it to my hearts content, which was my original course of action, I got talked into the newer car, and lost a fortune by doing so....a modified C3 with good rubber can keep up with anything....
apparently I have C5 type power in my car now, and tires as big, so what's they have that I don't....especially for 30 grand extra???
I shopped both before buying my C3. They're really completely different cars and I prefered the style and rough/tumble of the shark.
I have a C5 and I love the car, but your right, it is refined to a point of being almost antiseptic. It's like driving a starship, you put it in gear, and say "engauge" and boom! it's gone, but I have riden in a 70 coupe, and there is definitely something to be said for the rough and tumble of the older Vettes. When the 99' is paid for (less than a year from now! :D ), I will begin working on operation "Shark". A 70-72 Vert 4 speed is the goal. :seeya
i've been reading the c5 mod section and those guys are having plenty of fun. 425RWHP with cam and heads. High 11's in the 1/4. Most drop the too quiet stock exhaust ASAP.
I am holding out for a c6, but if it is ugly, i'll get a yellow c5 M6 Z51 and mod it. AH may keep it from sliding off the road. We shall see.
And i will keep my 72 and 61, just in case it won't start.
Not mandatory till 74 and some states allow a 25 year 'grace period' if you will. If your car is older then 25 years no smog check. If you look at any high performance catalog most will state that replacement engines are only legal in 73 and older cars. Now you all are following that rule right?
Thanks so much for the kind words. I only wish all c5 owners had the respect you have. It's funny, you mention the smooth lines of my car and I'm thinking Oooohh, he's got an L-88....dayam!...I want one!
Actually I cancelled my order on a '03 Z06 yellow/red and decided to put the money in the C3. As nice as a C5/Z06 is, it will never have the feel of a Big Block C3. :nonod:
You guys are absolutly right.... they are 2 completly different cars. Hell I could have a c5 easily for all the money I've poured into my C3 over the last few years. Will I get one... yeah I probably will, eventually. But I'm not going to give up my C3 for one. They are completly different!!! I love old cars... Chevelles, Camaros, you name it. My C3 is my version of a modernized classic, it's not supposed to have all the creature comforts of the c5 in my opinion... I love it like it is.
Yeah it's more challenging to keep sometimes with all the maintiance and repairs, but I wouldn't have it any other way!!!
If any of you haven't driven a C5... don't. You'll want one!!! They are damn nice cars!!!
Only way to resolve is to have both  ,a 1966 big/block with side exhaust & 2001 convert auto Z51 for when you wdont want to shift...1966 best et 13.7 @102 MPH, 2OO1 C5 best ET 13.13 @ 106 mph.......the 1966 is more fun to drive.........the 2001 gets 25 MPH highway................ :seeya ;)
