It may be time to weld a couple of bungs in the exhaust and invest in a wideband O2 sensor.

I don't think this is the preferred method of checking for a vacuum leak, but I took the air cleaner off and put my hands over the top of the car and it almost died. I ran out of carb spray. This problem also seems to be somewhat intermittent. It seems to smooth out and then the next time I go for a run, it will act up again?

Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about fully...but could this be valve float? Could the cam have had more lift than the springs on the head could handle?

It sounds like it's basically stumbling, and idling eratic. Wouldn't gulping air do that?

Not sure, but the springs are comp 981's which is what comp recommends. My old cam had .465 max lift and the new one has .469.

I will play around with the timing again tomorrow and see how that plays out.
