Does anyone know how to remove the wheel ring on a 1975 Corvette? Want to start restoring the wheels but don't want to brake the 4 ring clips, want to reuse. Does anyone have any clips, pics, or web links on how to do it?
If you have rings with the 4-clip design, it is better to use a long-shanked flat-blade screwdriver to use as a pry on the rim clips. If you pry/bend/twist at all on the ring material, it will crease/dent/wrinkle very easily. You just have to work your way around on both rim clips at each position. It seems to me that I released the first clip, then went to the clip opposite that one, and finally worked on the last two on each wheel. That kept the ring from getting twisted from the uneven spring loading.
It's a PITA to work on those...especially if they are the aftermarket rings. Those seem to have much stiffer spring material on those rim clips than was on the originals.
Hi,
I agree that a large flat screwdriver blade works well.
You need to be careful that you don't push the blade too far in, (only about 1/4"), or you can trap the part of the clip you're trying to release in place and make the release even more difficult. Be as careful as 7T1 advises.
Good Luck!
