Default Question about a new tranny

I am doing some long term research/Planing in my resotre of a 76: costing.

I am about to show my total lack of any knowledge about auto's.

This car IS/WILL be my daily driver to work. Travel, around 5 miles to work, suburba but light traffic. But i so drive highway alot too.

I am /thinking of putting one, of those 5k 5 speed manual boxes you guy are using.
But after a 5 week holiday in the USA drinving auto;s i was thinking..

What i like about manuals, what every gear i select it goes.

What i am not liking that much..( lazy of the hol ) the clutch in traffic.

But i want to change gear.

I drive a 270kw with a 6 speed man ATM so that is what i will be getting with the vet

Looking around at the turbo 400 and so forth, cause i know stuff all remember.....

What i want is:

A 3 speed with over drive or 4 th or something like that, to bring the revs down doing highway running and use gears 1 2 3 around town.

Also i want it to be fully maunual, and rev any gear. I wamt to always have to change gear. I dont want any full auto. I like changing gear. Its a thing you know.

And some sort of race/street shifter to go with it... like tap forward or back to change, dont like stock auto shifters.

Any ideads..

Engine plan is around 350/350 to 380/380hp and turque.

Had a little difficulty trying to understand what you want. Sounds like you want an automatic but not too clear. Try doing research on the 700r4 automatic.

yeah, i know what i mean, but not typed out that great

Round 2.

Did a little research.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TRANSMISS...item1c2842bebb
or
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TRANZCO-T...item256c451c51

so if i got that with a

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/B-M-StarS...item255ac4f319

or something like that, can i drive it like ...

Pull right back for 1st the notch up forward to 3rd?

But this is the confusion up above in what i was typing..

If i drive around at around 2rpm in 2nd maunal 2 and floor it. Will is stay in 2nd no mater what, i dont want it dropping down to 1st..
Like it would if you just drive a full auto d gear.
So i would drive it like a maunal up and down through the gears ,but no clutch.
Also i want good quick shifts, not worried if get a jerk. So if in 3 cruising and drop down a gear and floor it, it would be sharp and firm shift.

bold part is the way i want to drive it all the time. ( this is the goal)

Does a th 400 turbo bolted on to a 350 chev fit a 76 vet without cutting anything?

For another option to the top box would be a

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/180525560...84.m1423.l2649

which would give me 6 (3 and the 1/2's)full gears and with the 3 + o/d will bring revs down low at highway speed, but run a tall diff.

700R4 is a 3 speed box with a o/d. Found a place that made tuff ones ( as was told the 700r4 is weaker than the above box) This is also a option as long as i can drive it like the bold sentence above.

700R4 Transmission - Level Three
from these guys

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperf700r4.htm

If i pick my manual option it is going to cost me around 5.5k in cluding the clutch install so if i buy the one below i am talking about, not much more in price.

My mate is trying to talk me into the top option with the under/overdrive + the manual th400 box this a 4.10 or 3.93 rear end and something like the

mega shifter http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/B-M-LEFT-...item53e39a8055

and a 2800 or 3000 stally. behind a 380/380hp and touque 350.. ( or maybe a 383).
( i googled a few last night but i forget them now. I want a reverse shift like the megashifter, but there were some nicer ones..memory where you go..)

would the option my mate is talking about sound good? Can that be done just by buying then bolting in. No cutting tranny tunner or stuff like that.

Trying to find a friendly gear -ratio totype size for 100kph in top gear on the tacho

With a th350 as original tranny, if you want less modification as possible go for a th200-4r.

but IMO: If you want to shift manualy your gear take a manual tranny !!!

If you just want an automatic tranny that can only be manually shifted, you can do that with any model trans if you install a "shift kit" designed for that purpose. However, if you want the shifting to be actuated by a paddle-shifter on the steering wheel, you would need to install a fully electronic transmission (like a 4L60E, et al); or, you can modify the valve body on one of the hydraulic trannies with some electric shift solenoids adapted to the valve body. (There may be kits to do this; you should do some research on the internet, and also do the same for steering wheel paddle-shifter mechanisms, while you're at it.)

If you find what you need, certainly rigging that stuff up to an overdrive transmission would be better for you when cruising on the highway.

Then just get a "manual" shift kit for whatever auto tranny you choose. Then you won't have to use your left foot....but you will be forever using your right hand.

That is what I want.

So a th 350 will bolt right in? No mod?

What about the 400.

And the under/overdrive. Will that fit in behind the 350 or 400 with out and fibreglass issues?

The 350 (in same configuration as the version for C3's) will bolt right in as it had the 350 in it from the factory. If you have a 'manual' transmission car, you will have some modification to do with the crossmember under the tranny, it's tranny mount and the length of the driveshaft. The rest is pretty easy.

A 400 will fit in there fine (it was used through 1974, I believe), but it would take a different tranny mount and different brackets for shift cable and lockout cable than for the 350. The 400 is a much stronger unit, however; but it is also less efficient.

Your TH 350 is easily swaped for a 200 R4.
You want a full manual valve body trans and a ratchet shifter.
Here is the trans
http://www.ckperformance.com/stg_200...#2004R_Stage_2
(order with full maual valve body)

Here is the shifter
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-80701/

Might not need TV cable with full manual valve body. Talk to CK
