i am building a new motor and when I went to put the new balancer on I think I have a problem. I used a installer and when I cranked it down, it only would draw it to about 3/16 from the timing cover. Is this about right or do I have a bigger problem? Thanks

Hiya,
I'm not an engine expert, but some pics might help with the responses.
Good Luck.
I have a similar problem, I had to replace the balancer on my L48 because of separation. The new part is identical. Like you, I seated it with an installer. now my water pump pulley doesn't line up, however the alt. and p. steer. seem to line up with the crank pulley. The water pump measures 5 13/16 block to flange. what's the deal? I apologize for jumping in on your post, but it seemed related.
The back end of the balancer, if I'm understanding you right, is not passing thru the seal and into the timimg cover. It has to go into the timing cover to seal. What I would do is take off the cover and seat your crank timing gear and balancer to make sure they are seated all the way and measure inside the balancer from the outside front of the balancer to the end of the crank snout. Don't remember the measurement but after you assemble it with the cover on you can check the measurement and see if everything is fully seated, even though you can't see that it is.

The balancer snout is way past the seal, I have about 3/16 from the seal and the back of the balancer. Thanks for the thought.
