Hello all, Im looking at the 82 collectors edition cars (really like the color and lines of this body style)but dont care for the crossfire set up maintence(all the old guy vette mechanics are retired) and woundered if it is possible to buy a conversion kit for this to upgrade to EFI or some other more modern set up. Anyone or shops offer this?
Maybe theres a thread on this?
Thanks for looking! Drew C from South CARolina
Drew, there are several kits available. I just purchased a Mass Flo EFI setup from another forum member for my '70. However, new they run $3,000 which is competitive with most of the other setups available.
Not certain why you would want to spend the money to do a conversion when the CFI set up is really pretty trouble free when serviced properly, unless of course you looking for performance more then 200hp .... Investment wise it would seem detrimental to do this ..???? The Collectors will probably still be the best investment if all original. IMO
I ran mine 5 our 6 years after I bought it without any problems, short of plugs, oil and filters. The only reason we had to open it up was due to a cam going flat ... ((this after nearly 200k on the clock)) .....
If it's running fine, I'd leave it alone. As you said, it's getting harder to find mechanics familiar with it, but any really good mechanic should be able to service one.
A bigger problem, may be the availability parts for the Cross-Fire. Not a lot of replacement parts are still being made for it, but until you needed something that you couldn't locate, I wouldn't worry about it.
Isn't CFI just a truck/Camaro TBI unit split in half? Or a truck/Camaro TBI unit is 2 CFI units put together? GM/Rochester TBI systems, whether for I4's or V8's are all pretty nice and hard to beat.
As stated, if running right, that system is really pretty solid. Just was installed at a time when most people messed with their own cars, and didn't have a shop work on them. Hence, not maintained or incorrectly maintained doesn't a bad system make.
By a CE and get the CFI to work properly, and then mod to make more power. It can be done, and would be more different at the cruises that a different EFI system.
