Is there a good write-up for the removal of the whole steering column? I need to remove the column so I can get the dash pad out. I saw some write ups that explain how to take the column apart, but I think that it gets unbolted and pulls out as one piece.
In the engine compartment, you need to disconnect the column from the rag joint - loosen/remove the one screw closest to the firewall. Use a large flat screwdriver to open up the clamp a bit. Disconnect the interlock cable from the column by the firewall.
In the car, disconnect the harmonica connector. Disconnect the ignition switch connector. Remove 2 bolts at the firewall. Remove the 2 vertical bolts.
That should be it. I recommend removing the wheel, it will make it easier to handle the column. Never remove the 4 interior bolts while the column is still connected to the rag joint, you can damage the rag joint or the steering box.
Just pulled mine in prep for body-off and Tremec TKO install. Piece of cake. The hardest part was unplugging the 41-year stuck on plugs. Care should be taken so as to not damage the plugs.
