Ever since I got my hands on my car and started the rebuild I've seen problems everywhere. One of which was the key ignition. It wouldn't start from the key, but would start when a remote starter was attached to the starter. For the past year or so I have been just putting the key to the 'on' position and using a push button to start it. Now that I have some time(and hopefully enough money) I want to figure this problem out. It'll start with the push button and they key in the 'on' position. Just not with the key to start it. Here's a little video of it. Anyone have any idea what it could be? Maybe the ignition switch or something?
Would a misadjusted switch be causing this problem? Last year some 'mechanics' took a look at the column and just 'replaced' the switch but it still wouldn't start. I'm guessing they left it misadjusted, or it might also be the neutral safety switch? possibly?
Yes when I turn it to start it automatically 'springs' back to on like any other car. It feels like any other cars ignition key, except mine doesn't do anything with starting the car for some reason.
The safety switch for an auto is under the gearshift in the console and from there goes to the starter. Purple wire.
Test these 2 areas for 12 with key in start.
I think the part you saw was when the key was in the off position. So the voltmeter wasn't getting a reading.
I turn the key to on and it jumps up. It's in the video as well.
Used my tester light on the 2 purple wires. No current whatsoever.
And I remember having the starter wired up correctly. If it was wired incorrectly, would it still start with a push button?
One of the purples is coming from the ign switch and one should be coming from the starter solenoid.
If both are cold in the START position you might have to back up towards the ignition switch to see where your losing power.
How was your button wired in ? Did someone disconnect a purple to wire in the button ?
For the button I'll have to ask my dad since he wired it in last year while I was in school. I'll look through all the connections and try to get some pictures.
Some wires from the fuse box are missing. Like not plugged in. I'm thinking it might be the reason it won't start via key ignition. I'll try to get some pictures to see what you think.
Do you have a way to apply 12v to the solid purple wire at the neutral safety switch,if so try that and see if the starter cranks, make sure your in park.
Another thought, try using your test light on the purples while your pushing your start button. (make sure the alligator clip is attached to a good ground.don't put the light between the purples in other words)
The solid purple should go to the starter,if you apply 12v there and it cranks ,we will know you have a connection from the neutral switch to the starter.
If it doesn't crank , its possible that wire has been disconnected to install the button start.
note-the purple with the white stripe goes to the ignition switch
