Default Starter Heat Shield

Just curious about heat shields on starters. Has anyone ever made one themselves. It looks like a rather easy project. I've just installed my new headers (ceramic coats) and today, I rebuild the starter. I think before I reinstall the starter, I'm gonna try and make one up. If you've done it already, lets here your advise on the topic.

There seem to be two types commercially avaialble - medium gauge sheet metal reflector shields that bolt on and freflective insulating blankets that wrap around. No reason why you couldn't make the first yourself.

When I replaced the starter 2 years ago I bought one of the insulating blankets and straps. I've never had a starting problem. PRior to that, the starter wouldn't crank when very hot.

I think it was the starter that fixed the problem, but figured it couldn't hurt being I already had it apart. Was pretty cheap too.

I bought the jeg's heat shield, was only $20 but couldn't seem to figure out how to mount it.:smash: It would seem simple enough, but must be one size fits nothing. It's still sitting in my shop. Maybe I will buy the blanket style.

I did try a couple of types of heat shield on standard oem-style starters, but to no avail. Heat soak eventually reared its ugly head. Finally, I installed MCleod mini hi-torque starter, along with the flexible wrap-type shield and had never had a problem since. The added bonus is that the mini-starter leaves much more space between it and the headers (Doug Thorley). Assembly is so much easier!

bmar. If I rememger corectly one hole on that shield bolts to the rear of the starter.
dave68.I also found out that there is a heavy duty starter. You can tell by the thickness of the barrel that connects the starter to the selenoid. The heavy duty last longer.Good luck.

I didn't attach the rear of the heat shield; just the front two attaching points and I actuall 'opened' the bottom mounting hole so that I can pivot the shield out and then push it forward off of the top bolt/attaching point. Plenty secure and accomodates the beefy cables that made attaching the rear point of the shield impossible. Worked fine on my delco style starter.
