Got the flywheel off last night and there are two questionable spots I'd like an opinion on, rest of it is on pretty good shape. Are these bad enough to go ahead and replace it? Also, I have turned over the car a lot recently, and of those it has only started up the last two times when I finally got all the wiring figured out. These are the only two spots that are really shiny, would the starter have just caused these breaks or was it the starter gear slipping enough on these spots to have happened to have taken off the rust?
Sorry for the flurry of questions lately, the TKO project is taking up the wife's parking spot in the garage now that the engine is out and it won't be long before I hear about it with the heat we're getting here around DC now.
If it were mine I'd replace it too. As long as the flywheel's friction surface can be Blanchard-ground resurfaced, I'd have that done as well as pressing on a new ring gear. While the machine shop is at it, have it balanced too.
I wouldn't put it back like that. I've heard of heating up the ring ,removing and flipping over to take advantage of the good teeth, never done it myself.
Did not know that you could just replace the gear ring, that makes the decision easy enough unless it will be more expensive to replace the ring, machine and balance than it would be to just outright buy a new one.
