I'm a first timer here w/1980 L48 doing some rear suspension work and would love some help setting the rear camber (new Van-Steel adjt. struts) good enough to get her 3-miles or so to an allignment shop.
Not looking for someone to do the work...just tech/moral support ( I will supply the adult beverages ) so if your feeling freindly and have some time, hit me up. Looking to do this in the next couple of weeks.
When the suspension is fully settled, the tops of each rear wheel should be tilted in about 1/4" off of vertical. You can use 4 or 5 sheets of slippery magazine pages under each tire as a poor man's slide.

Just set it up so it's close to vertical - you can use a bubble-level to verify. Camber can be off by 10 degrees in either direction, and it's not going to rip up your tires on a 3-mile drive. If the toe were off by a huge margin, you're going to be shredding tires... but camber won't cause any ill effect if it's anywhere in the ballpark on a short drive.
If you want to set it up right on the money, you can e-mail me for my "Rear Camber Setup" paper.
This is the worst reference for doing a rear alignment. It was written by a person who never actually did an alignment.
Toe-in is always set last.
Camber changes affect ride height.
Ride height changes affect toe-in and camber.
Never string to the front wheels.

Okay. Good to know. I was dialing in my ride height and just had a shop do mine this weekend. Didn't mess with it myself since it wasn't too far off. Just saw the article and thought it might be helpful.
