if you're lucky, the bracket is still in place. it's mounted high on the door pillar, but you should see the tube that the handle fits into under the air vent. just slide the new cable into the existing bracket. the cable emerges from the firewall on the left side of the brake master cylinder mounting area next to the female hood latch. there will be a rubber gromet. it will exit the firewall at about a 45* angle. if the bracket is not there, you're up for a tough job bolting it to the pillar.

I am constantly amazed at how many folks buy a 40 year old car, but don't have the basic resources to work on it.

Absolute necessities for DIY C3 owners:

Owner's Manual

Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM)
for your year car

Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual
and if you want to rebuild engine/trans/accessory items,

Chevrolet Chassis Overhaul Manual

Total cost for the above items ~ $100; small 'potatos' for doing a job right on a multi-thousand dollar car, IMO.

You forgot "a host of universal joints and socket extensions".

The above advice is great though. The amount of information in the AIM and service manuals is ridiculous.

Hi st,
The actual hole for the cable in the firewall is very small. You might not even be able to find it from the interior side.
I suggest you find it from the engine compartment side and push a wire, (or something), through it so you can find it on the interior side.
I agree that the AIM is priceless for jobs like this.
Regards,
Alan

I replaced my inside cable - the part includes the "pull" handle. It is a super $itch to take off and replace the 2 bolts that holds it to the pillar. You have to be a contorshinish to get your wrench or small socket on it and you'll have to know a lot of sware words. Getting it thru the firewall is an easy task.

thanks to those that helped , alan the wire from the outside did the trick on getting the cable thru. my bracket had been removed and it was a pain installing the new one. i do have an aim , chassis manual and an ample amount of tools as i have been working on cars for over 40 years. nowhere in the aim does it show where the bracket is mounted so i asked. what amazes me is the people who would rather bash than help

Hi st,
The location for the bracket for the pull handle is shown in the 71 AIM in UPC 12, Sheet A8.
You really have to look at the left-side hinge pillar to understand what the drawing is showing.
Also, the whole thing is just called out as Cable Asm, so that's not much help in finding it either.
I'm glad you got your's in!
Regards,
Alan

i agree, sometimes the aim, is a little lacking in some of the pics for installing a certain part. i guess once the person on the assembly line figured out where a part went , repetition was the rule on how to install it.

Maybe an off topic but are there more than 1 assembly manuals. I must have the gazillionist photocopy of the original, the print is for krap, the index is basically worthless and whenever I go to look something up I end up flipping thru every page and ultimately go to my Paragon catalog to see where things go.

Hi TW,
Personally I think the AIM from Corvette America has about as good a print quality as any I've looked at.
I guess it could vary from year to year though.
I've never really felt that I couldn't find something because the print was too faint in the sets I've had.
Regards,
Alan

Hi Alan, thanks for the reply. Well, it's the CA AIM that I have. Maybe I need new glasses.
Now back to our regular scheduled program...
