Ok, this would be calories as a newby question lol, I got my 79 last weekend and I'm still trying to figure out the ins and outs. I found this lock on the spare, my question is would this have been a factory dealer item? Is there any way of finding a way to get it off without destroying the mount?
Thanks
I have a picture but I don't know how to post it yet on here
Hi CS,
Your 79 had a lock on the spare tire tub rear bolt when your car left St. Louis.
Generally the 'round' key of the 2 keys you received unlocks it; the same key that unlocks the storage compartment behind the seats.
Regards,
Alan
63-79 Corvettes came with the spare tire lock as standard equipment. The same key that works your glove box, (the oval head one) should remove the spare tire lock.
If it is the wrong lock, or if your missing the key, you can unbolt the lock bolt, bracket and lock from the rear crossmember, and take the whole assembly to a locksmith.
Yep, looks like I'm in for a trip to a locksmith, my door key slips into the lock but no turn. The door key doesn't work the glovebox either. I guess the door locks have been changed.
Before you take it to a locksmith soak the whole thing in WD40 or PB Blaster for a day or two. I had the same problem and this fixed it.
I agree, what do you have to lose. Mine didn't turn when I first tried it, sprayed some WD-40 into the key slot waited a couple of minutes and did it again. after three or four shots stuck the key in and it turned. Just be careful you don't break the key off in the lock. After I got mine off I put a cover on it to help protect it.
Before you go to the locksmith try this. CF member, Roger, helped me with the same problem. Went to WM and bought a dental pick, soaked lock in penetrating oil for a few hours, 30 minutes of trying slid the lock off.
2 bolts and you can remove the assembly and work on it on the bench. While on the bench you can easily remove the lock from the long bolt with a little finesse. I'll see if I can find the thread I posted some pics in of the removal.

"this would be calories as a newby question"
Calories? Damn you, auto-correct!!!!!!
Sounds like good advice, so far. Soak it, try it, if no joy, off to the locksmith. If you wind up with a key to the spare tire lock that is different from the door and glove box key, tape it to the jack, so you will know where it is if you ever have to deal with a flat tire. Good luck!
Keep the shiny side up!
