Default Harmonic balancer slipped

If my Harmonic balancer has slipped does this mean its not balanced any longer? Do I need a new one or can I just re mark TDC?

Thanks ,
Mike

Buy a new one... and don't get a professional products one. (professional products dampers only work if you have procomp heads )

It's still balanced..unless it's an external balanced engine with a carved out spot in the outer ring. Most have added weight on the hub part...but either way...

YES..you need a new one...NOW! When they slip they are very prone to coming apart violently. The outer ring is no longer attached strongly to the center hub and it's going to keep getting worse. Best case is it only slips back against the timing cover and eats a hole in it. Worst case is that the ring ends up cracking and flying off at an inopportune time..like when going through the gears..or why you're staring at it trying to set the timing.

You dont have to have a high $$ fancy one..but you need a good one.

I used Damper Doc; he replaced the elastomer (?) and degreed the outer ring.
Might have been cheaper to buy another, but I kinda like the old stuff...

Just like this, though mine hadn't worn completely through the timing cover yet:

No personal insult intended but that is a really, really ugly engine for a corvette. I see it is partially disassembled. Spray paint is cheap.

The balancer was smoothing out the timing cover for him. 33% less prep work.

That's what the engine looked like when I got the car.
I put exactly 0 miles on it like that, it was one of the first things removed.

It's a bit cleaner in there nowadays. Heck, it's not even the same engine.

Good thing you replaced that engine- the original looks like the only thing holding the timing chain from jumping is the amount of goo caked on it.

My rotating assembly was balanced, without the neutrally balanced fluid damper. and then added.... i shift at 6500-7000rpm... and it is as smooth as you could ever imagine...

There was one member, can't remember who, *Tshort* comes to mind. I think he is still here, but he bought a Lucky Products balancer and said he took for a drive, came home parked it overnight and when he came out in the morning the balancer was on the floor under his Vette

Well, I'm sure there will be comments on both sides of the fence here, but for me I believe that it in fact did cut down on my vibration.... i run a 383 and it is absolutely smooth as any new modern vett.

pauldana - do you have the Fluidamper part# you are running on your 383? Are you running the stock water pump and alternator pulleys?

Thanks

There is only one that my friend who owns an engine shop will put on any serious motor and that is the ATI Super Damper

I have this one on my 427 it is SFI 18.1 rated and is NHRA / IHRA and NasCar approved there is one almost the same but $90 cheaper in price ATI-917781, the only difference is steel outer shell as opposed to aluminum

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATI-917782/

You probably don't need this type for your engine, just showing you what is out there and available
