I'm replacing my carburetor, first time doing something like this. When I lifted the old carb off I found three gaskets, and some silicone gasket goop under one side of the bottom gasket. Is this normal? Should I scrape the crud off (keeping it out of the intake) and replace the three gaskets? The metal one in the middle looks fine so maybe just replace the other two? Are three usually sandwiched like this?
I am in the middle of going through something along these lines. Double checked with Lars and the short answer is yes.
Mainfold to metal shim (sounds like factory setup) and then rather than leaving the hot metal shim right against the carb, another gasket gets added between them.

Any suggestions on where I would find the replacement gasket set? The folks at the counter for O'reilly and Advance didn't have a clue and nothing came up in their systems. Also, NAPA/Riebes didn't have a kit, he indicated that he had the 'open' gasket, and another store in Stockton has the 'closed gasket' but that no one has the shim....
Here's some of the info I gathered, also some chevelle site and a few others, then asked Lars and the three listed we what he recommended.
That being said, I was working for a 72 Q-Jet, s/b the same on yours though http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...lts-stuck.html

"Your bottom gasket is a Fel Pro 60043.
Your middle steel heat shield is a Fel Pro 60731.
The top gasket is a Mr. Gasket 4256G.

This is the 4 hole fiber gasket w/o the groove(smiley face)
This gasket must be a composite gasket as paper will burn through
and cause fuel /air leaks..."

You have the "Smiley Face" exhaust crossover intake, and you need a special carb base gasket set. You can e-mail me for a paper on this with photos and part numbers.
